Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation Overview (Coach Guide)

Based on self-determination theory, our highest forms of motivation involve one of three types of intrinsic motivators:

  • Inherently enjoyable
  • Connected to the individual’s values (integrated with what the person cares about most)
  • Personally meaningful or important (the person identifies with the goal) 

Coaching to tap into intrinsic motivation

Interests

  • What are you the most interested in?
  • What interests you about pursuing this goal?
  • What do you want to learn about the most?
  • What do you hope to learn in the process?

Enjoyment

  • What types of things do you enjoy doing the most?
  • What activities would you engage in just because you want to, even if no one ever knew?
  • What brings you joy? 
  • When are you the happiest?

Values

  • How do you want to live your life?
  • What matters most about working toward this?
  • What's most important for you to demonstrate here?

Personal Importance

  • How does this relate to who you want to be in the world?
  • What would it mean for you to achieve this?
