Overview

We can learn to manage our behaviors by noticing habits or reactions that are not helpful to our goals or how we want to be in the world and consciously replace them with intentional responses.

  • Habits – Behaviors we’ve repeated for so long they’ve become automatic
  • Reactions – Triggered stress responses (e.g., fight, flee, freeze, fawn, etc.)
  • Responses – Effortful use of our higher thinking to respond in a reasonable, helpful way

Situation

  • Lacking a helpful routine to get school assignments done. Stay up half the night doing assignments and only get a few hours of sleep before school.

Unhealthy Habit Keeping Me Stuck

  • Procrastinating. Playing games or socializing with friends until late at night. Putting off all work until afterward then, not sleeping until it's done.

Healthy Habit to Build For Improvement

  • Taking an hour break to decompress after school then creating a two-hour schoolwork block to knock out assignments before resuming play/social time. Getting to bed by 11 PM to get a full night's sleep.
