Managing Feelings Exercise

Managing emotions well is about being able to work through, with, and/or around them as a natural part of our human experiences. We can learn to be more responsive rather than reactive. The appropriate response will be different based on the situation. We might need to:

  • Take a breather, take a walk, or use a positive distraction to self-soothe to a calmer state
  • Express ourselves by communicating what we need or want
  • Accept what we’re feeling and allow it to pass. All emotions eventually pass.
  • Decide if there’s an action to take to move toward our goal(s) and take the emotion with us.
    • For example, sometimes when we’re afraid the only antidote is to do the thing afraid to prove to ourselves that we can handle it.
  • Here's an example of someone thinking about how his emotions and reactions got in the way of his goal to be more responsible.

He decided to change his response to the emotions to move toward his goals...

Let's consider your own situation...

Now, consider how you may respond differently to move toward your goals...

What are your key takeaways from this exercise?
