Motivation is fuel. When we focus on what we want to avoid, our motivation is fear-based, which activates our internal threat response. Our threat response is designed to close us off and keep us tense. It’s pretty difficult to work well that way. When we focus on what we want to achieve, our motivation is challenge- or desire-based, which activates our capacity to engage and experience positive emotions on the way. We can learn to use the right type of fuel for the task to give us the energy that fits best.
