Preventing/Recovering from Burnout or Workaholism

"Workaholism is characterized by the compulsive need to work and to do so to an excessive degree. A workaholic is one who has trouble refraining from work. This type of driven overinvolvement in work is often a source of significant stress, interpersonal difficulties, and health problems." (APA, 2018, para. 1).

Signs are spending excessive time on work, a compulsive need for achievement, and neglecting self-care. The following chart provides strategies to prevent or recover from workaholism or burnout, which is a common outcome. The strategies outlined in teal are top priority for those currently experiencing burnout.
