Carlo Diclemente and James Prochaska developed the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) in the 70s. TTM studies have found people who achieve long-term change tend to process through six stages of change on the way. They may even cycle back and forth between the stages, recycling the success behaviors, as they go.
•Precontemplation
•Contemplation
•Preparation
•Action
•Maintenance
•And Termination
Each of the stages have associated principles of progress, which are the things successful changers did in each stage to advance to the next one.
The model has been studied and used for decades in the addiction, mental health, and wellness fields to help people transition away from unhealthy behaviors to healthy behaviors.
